Freddy Fender was born in Texas and grew up in Lubbock, Texas. He was a very good athlete and started playing the guitar at the age of eight. He was offered a scholarship to attend Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, but he never attended. He moved to Nashville where he lived for ten years before finally settling in Austin in 1992
Freddy is a well-known Austin-based singer/songwriter and guitarist, and is known for his original songs and guitar playing. He has written and recorded six albums and has been nominated for five Austin Music Awards. Freddy has played at numerous festivals including South By Southwest, Cactus Heart, South By Southwest Music Festival, Austin City Limits Music Festival, SXSW Interactive, ACL Live Music Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Telluride Jazz Festival, Red Rocks Amphitheater, Aspen Jazz Festival, Bottlerock Music Festival, Stagecoach Country Music Festival among others.
Freddy has toured the United States with former Eagle Randy Meisner as well as with The New Pornographers for over 20 years. Freddie is also a member of the band Blacktop Cowboys .
